Nipple Alternatives
Choose silicone nipples
over rubber, which hide less bacteria and are heat-resistant,
so they can be safely put in a dishwasher. Silicone
nipples are clear, not yellow like the rubber.
* Both silicone
and rubber nipples should be inspected for tears
and cracks by holding
them up to a light. To avoid bacteria, throw cracked
nipples away.
* It's best
to avoid disposable nursers, which use specialized
nipples that can't be
exchanged for the safer, silicone nipples .
* Bottles and
nipples must be sterilized before their first use.
After that, you can wash bottles
and nipples thoroughly in warm, soapy water after
each use, or put them through
a dishwasher. Some pediatricians, however, recommend
sterilizing bottles and nipples prior to each use
for the first few months
of life. Consult your pediatrician if you are unsure
about sterilization.
